Ryan Dolan, who represented Ireland at the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest, has for the first time spoken openly about his sexuality, revealing that he is gay.
During an interview with Derek Mooney on RTE Radio 1 today, Ryan Dolan stated that; In school I was confused about who I was, and it was really hard for me growing up because of that. It was hard to deal with because I knew that I was gay, but I couldn’t get the courage to talk to someone about it […] My father was the last person to find out because I was afraid of what he would think. I think he actually took it the better than anyone I told.
Ryan later went on to talk about his struggle with coming to terms with his sexuality, revealing that hiding who he was made him contemplate suicide. Although never attempting to commit suicide, Ryan admitted that it was a thought in [his] mind.
Reflecting on how he dealt with his sexuality, Ryan admitted that; Thinking back now I wish I would have came out about it a long time ago. I think my youth was wasted worrying all the time about it. If I had been more open back then I would have been happier. Encouraging parents to speak to their children about their sexuality, Ryan stated; There are parents who might have an inkling there’s something different about their son or daughter. Maybe just ask them, they don’t have to go through the pressure of coming out and saying the words.
Talking about his upcoming single Start again, Ryan commented; I wanted to write a song about myself growing up, which is how the song came about. He also revealed that the music video will focus on the story of two young boys who know they are gay. The single is planned to be released on the 7 March.

Al reflexionar sobre cómo se enfrentó a su sexualidad , Ryan admitió que , Pensando ahora me hubiera gustado que hubiera salió de eso hace mucho tiempo. Creo que mi juventud se desperdicia preocuparse todo el tiempo sobre él. Si yo hubiera sido más abierto en ese entonces yo habría sido más feliz . Animar a los padres a hablar con sus hijos acerca de su sexualidad , Ryan declaró ; Hay padres que puedan tener una idea hay algo diferente acerca de su hijo o hija. Tal vez sólo hay que preguntar , ellos no tienen que ir a través de la presión de salir y decir las palabras .
Hablando acerca de su próxima Start soltera de nuevo , Ryan comentó , yo quería escribir una canción sobre mí crece , que es como la canción se produjo.
