Ha fallecido a los 92 años Jetty Paerl, la cantante holandesa que representó a su país en la primera edición del festival, con "De vogels van Holland". Fue la primera canción de la historia del festival al ser la primera canción de aquella noche. Descanse en paz.
Jetty Paerl, the first ever Dutch Eurovision entrant and also the first ever performer in the contest, died yesterday. Her family announced the news earlier today.
Paerl entered the Eurovision Song Contest 1956 for The Netherlands with her song De Vogels van Holland (written by Annie M.G. Schmidt and Cor Lemaire) and performed first in the first ever contest. She rose to fame in her home country during the Second World War, when she used to sing songs on Radio Oranje, a special show for Dutch listeners, broadcast from London. Her name during that time was changed to ‘Jetje’. After the Eurovision Song Contest, Paerl joined a group called the Swinging Nightingales. She also worked as a supporting actress in theatres across the country.
Lys Assia, who knew Paerl from Eurovision 1956, said on her Facebook page that she was very sad to hear about Paerl’s passing, calling her a great artist.
