Austria: ORF looking internal for 2014? Change of tactic in Vienna?
According to a couple of news outlets in Austria, broadcaster ORF is looking at selecting their 2014 Eurovision Song Contest entry internally. Despite returning to the competition in 2011 and making the final, Austria have now missed out in the past two years and need to turn their fortunes around.
This year’s national final saw a re-vamped format, with five acts hand-picked by Thomas Rabitsch and voting from an international jury as well as the public. Despite the change of tactic, Natália Kelly (pictured) placed 14th, scoring 27 points.
Austria selected several acts internally over the 90s.

Conchita Wurst to represent Austria in 2014
Vienna, Austria -
The Austrian public broadcaster ORF has confirmed that Conchita Wurst has been internally chosen to represent the Central European country in Copenhagen. The song is yet to be chosen. Conchita Wurst, whose real name is Tom Neuwirth, has already participated in the 2012 national final, where she came second.
While the last three representatives of Austria in the Eurovision Song Contest have all been selected in a public national final, ORF have opted for an internal selection procedure for 2014. Today, the singer to represent the "Alpine republic" has been announced.
Conchita Wurst has already once tried to win the ticket to the Eurovision stage, in 2012, when she came second with the song That's What I Am behind Trackshittaz in the Austrian national selection. Previously she had participated in the "Starmania" talent show, where she competed against Nadine Beiler, the Austrian representative in the 2011 Eurovision Song Contest.
From Talent Shows to Extreme Formats
Conchita Wurst was born as Tom Neuwirth on November 6th, 1988 in Gmunden/Austria. The young artist had always dreamed of a career in showbiz. It all really started in 2006 when he took part in the talent show Starmania. In 2007, he joined the boy band "jetzt anders!", which however only survived for less than one year.
He first performed as his alter ego Conchita Wurst, the famous long-haired full-bearded lady, in the talent show "Die große Chance" in 2011. Since then, he certainly has not gone unnoticed in Austria. More recently, Conchita Wurst participated in the ORF production "The hardest jobs of Austria", where she worked in a fish factory, and in "Wild Girls", where a group of candidates had to survive in the deserts of Namibia/Africa together with native tribes.

"Tengo unas cinco canciones para el festival, algunas co-escritas por mi. La verdad es que me resulta muy dificil elegir", comenta Conchita.
"Estoy entre la balada o una canción up-tempo", refiriéndose a qué estilo escoger para presentarse ante Europa, ya que "quiero contar una historia con mi número". Su intención es ir más allá de una simple actuación y "mostrar los valores en los que creo y compartirlos tanto como sea posible durante la semana del festival".
