When they first got in touch I was adamant I wouldn't do it because I guess I haven't engaged with the competition much in the last few years. But having spoken to them about what they wanted to do, and doing my homework about previous winners and entrants, it sounded quite exciting. I've been living by the ethos of following your heart and not your head, and when I spoke to Guy I just got that feeling in my tummy. I thought, 'OK this is surprising but I think I need to try this.' I really wasn't expecting to be won over, but I was. I certainly feel like I'm doing the right thing. You've had a top 10 hit already so you're not a total newcomer. Yes I had a top 10 with Raindrops, which I co-wrote with Sash and that was an amazing experience. But my heart just wasn't in that if I'm honest. I wasn't being true to myself as a songwriter and artist. So it was a very conscious decision to move away from that and write music that felt sincere and natural to me. But that experience was incredible and threw me in the deep end and has stood me in good stead. You lent your voice to a number of dance tracks - did you decide you would rather write your own material? Yeah, I feel like I lost myself a little bit. I lost what I was about as an artist and was doing what I was told. Getting back to who I am as an artist felt really good. I was broke, but actually that doesn't scare me. Reino Unido en Eurovisión
Como debutó un año después que los siete pioneros y se ausentó el año siguiente, el Reino Unido suma 56 participaciones, las mismas que Francia y una menos que Alemania. Con sus cinco victorias y sus quince segundos puestos, ofrece un palmarés envidiable que se ha visto muy afectado en la última década, en la que incluso ha llegado a saborear el amargor del cero (2003) y de tres farolillos rojos (2003, 2008 y 2010). En Moscú'09 recuperó posiciones con Jade Ewen y el tema It's my time, que alcanzó el 5º puesto, pero en Oslo'10 Josh volvió a lo más hondo de la tabla con That sounds good to me (25º y último con diez puntos).

Triunfaron por el Reino Unido Sandie Shaw en 1967 con Puppet on a string, Lulu en 1969 con Boom bang a bang, el grupo Brotherhood of Man en 1976 con Save your kisses for me, el grupo Buck’s Fizz en 1981 con Making your mind up y Katrina & The Waves en 1997 con Love shine a light. Quince veces ha quedado en segundo lugar (1959, 1960, 1961, 1964, 1965, 1968, 1970, 1972, 1975, 1977, 1988, 1989, 1992, 1993 y 1998) y tres en el tercero (1973, 1980 y 2002). Su puntuación más alta data de 1997 (227). Su posición más baja es el 26º de 2003. En el 2011 Blue conseguían 100 puntos y un 11º puesto, el veterano Engelbert Humperdinck sólo conseguía en el 2012 doce puntos que le situaban en el puesto 25 mientras que Bonnie Tyler en 2013 tan sólo conseguía veinticinco puntos, consiguiendo así un 19ª puesto.
