Austria en Eurovisión

Este 2014 supone la 47ª participación de Austria, que tan solo ha obtenido un triunfo, en 1966 con el famoso Merci, Chérie de Udo Jürgens. Además de su única victoria, los austríacos han conseguido estar en el top 10 en 18 ocasiones, pero jamás como subcampeones o medallistas de bronce. Eso sí, han quedado ocho veces en último lugar, tres de ellas sin recibir ningún punto. Por otro lado, Austria ha renunciado a participar en el festival europeo en numerosas ocasiones: 1969 (como protesta contra el régimen franquista), 1970 (a modo de queja ante el cuádruple empate de la edición anterior), 1973-1975 (posiblemente como protesta contra el sistema de votación), 2006 (por sus malos resultados) y 2008-2010 (de nuevo, como queja ante el sistema de votación y debido a sus malos resultados). Tras su última vuelta, Austria consiguió pasar a la final con Nadine Beiler y The Reason Is Love (18ª posición en la final); sin embargo, en 2012 y 2013 este país no tuvo tanta suerte y se quedó en semifinales.

La elección austríaca

De cara a 2014 la ORF decidió cambiar de táctica con respecto a los dos años anteriores, en los que realizó preselecciones públicas, y el 10 de septiembre de 2013 anunció a Conchita Wurst como su representante en Copenhague. La canción también fue elegida internamente entre cinco temas que Conchita envió a la televisión austríaca. Antes de anunciar el tema seleccionado, la artista informó de que se debatía entre una balada y un tema más movido, aunque tenía claro que con su propuesta pretendía (y pretende) mostrar al resto del mundo que Austria es un país que aboga por la tolerancia. Finalmente, tras retrasar la fecha del anuncio, el 18 de marzo de este año se dió a conocer el tema austríaco para Eurovisión 2014, Rise Like a Phoenix. Conchita Wurst

Thomas Neuwirth, el hombre que se esconde detrás de Conchita, nació en Gmunden en 1988 y es un cantante, drag y diseñador austríaco que se graduó en la escuela de moda de Graz en 2011.

Tras la discriminación que sufrió durante su adolescencia por ser gay, Tom creó a Conchita, la mujer barbuda, como una declaración por la tolerancia y la aceptación sin importar las apariencias.

En 2006 participó en el concurso Starmania, en el que quedó en segundo lugar, tras Nadine Beiler, quien representó a Austria en Eurovisión 2011. Al año siguiente, Thomas formó la banda Jetzt anders!, que se desintegró a los pocos meses de su creación. Fue en 2011, ya como Conchita Wurst, cuando participó en el concurso musical Die große Chance. En 2012 probó suerte con Eurovisión al participar en Österreich rockt den Song Contest, la preselección austríaca para el festival de Bakú, donde quedó en segundo lugar con la canción That's What I Am, tras Trackshittaz. Finalmente, Conchita (o Thomas) va a conseguir su sueño de pisar el escenario eurovisivo en 2014 gracias a la elección interna de la ORF.

Creo que es la típica canción que todos esperábamos de ella. Así que no ha habido sorpresa.

Muy James Bond de los 70… No está mal, pero no creo que la escuche mucho.

Y con el combo artista+canción tiene complicado el pase a la final, porque el público "generalista" va a ver a una señora con barba cantar una balada seria, sin ningún tipo de coña, y se van a quedar desconcertados. Como poco.

Este año estamos con el revival Bond años 70.
A mi la canción me agrada, me gustan este tipo de canciones, pero es cierto que Conchita ofrece una imagen tan chocante que puede perjudicarle. Canta bien, defiende sus temas en directo con mucho carisma, la canción no es un chiste es un tema serio y delicado, pero el público no va a saber bien de qué va el asunto. ¿Es una mujer con barba? ¿Un hombre disfrazado de mujer que no se ha afeitado? Desde luego se hablará mucho de ella, está claro.

Puntos a favor:

1. La imagen. Efectivamente cuando se lleva una imagen controvertida puede pasar de todo. Desde Dana, que aunque su imagen era normal, venía con la mochila de su historia, hasta Marija, Lordi, Verka, etc. hasta los tortazos de Tellier, Paul Oskar, Silvia Night, etc... Pero en cualquier caso la imagen es algo que a mí me gusta, que me sorprendan, que resulten transgresores. Y Conchita lo es.

2. El mensaje. Conchita lleva su propia lucha por la igualdad del mismo modo que Lady Gaga la suya. Qué mejor manera de proclamar que no debe existir discriminación bajo ningún concepto, que llevando una imagen extrema. Su lucha contra la homofobia, y las críticas de tv dictatoriales que proclaman que van a censurar su actuación me parece más que suficiente para llevar al ESC más motivos para obligarlos a abrir su mente por pelotas. Y el mensaje en este caso viene a decir eso, que por muchos palos que te den, por mucho que te marginen y te quieran pisar el cuello, debes resurgir de tus cenizas y levantarte.

3. La música. Me encantan las ranciadas sinfónicas a lo Trollentina, o hasta a lo Álex, y este tema parece de Lys Assia. Me encanta ese sonido James Bond como decís, esa especie de Skyfall meets Sognu, pero con ese toque pop setentero que hace que a mí me parezca mucho más interesante que Sognu o Mother. Tiene un sonido muy de orquesta a lo Webber, muy pretencioso, rancio, pero que me llena. Me recuerda al Minage de MoNa, o a cualquier diva italiana rancia. Una maravilla de canción la cante Conchita, o la cante Mina.

Feliz de que alguien les haga la vida imposible a los rusos, a los polacos, y a todos esos trogloditas cerrados de mente.

Pero te gusto la canción al margen de lo que ella representina. Me emociona más la balada de Trollentina Monetta.

Sí, yo tuve en mi top el Crisalide, el It's My Time, el Ljepa Tena, etc... Me suelen gustar mucho las ranciadas y más si suenan a diva acabada.

A mí me encanta lo que ella representa. Efectivamente, es un paso más allá, porque no es una supuesta "friki" cantando una "frikada", es una señora con barba cantando una balada muy en serio, en plan Barbara Streissand. Ole.

Desgraciadamente, creo que va muy por delante de Eurovisión y del Mundo en general, y sobre todo de una audiencia con ganas de fiesta un sábado por la noche. Me gusta mucho que esté ahí, pero me sorprendería que pasara a la final siquiera, desgraciadamente. Aunque la canción no esté mal y en la segunda semifinal apenas tenga competencia en cuanto a baladas.
